Military of Midgard

The military might of Midgard is relatively small compare to that of Utgard and Asgard . It is composed of 27.400 trained and standing men and woman. The men and woman are usually human , but gnome and halfling are in the military to, especially as anything else but normal infantry.

Midgard has 26 standing armies at all times. Twelve of these armies come from the twelve cities of Midgard. Ten more (relatively small) of these armies hail from the sclera and the last four come from the outposts.

Apart from this, the Military of Fellroot , the Yellowhill bannermen and The second halfling kingdom , can all field armies to help Midgard in times of crisis.

Lastly, most Midgardians own a weapon of sorts (usually cheap easily broken or improvised weapons, but weapons non the less) and might be forced to fight in the protection of their city or town.

Army layout

Every army is led by a single general, although generals usually employ a lot of advisers. Every army is composed of several regiments and special forces. 1 healer is employed per regiment (although some soldiers within the regiment might be trained in the art of healing) and 1 runner runs from the regiments' captain to the general and back if flags or other signals don't work to relay orders.

Field priests are responsible for the moral of several regiments beneath them. They sometimes also act as secondary healers and are in charge of burying the death after the battle. They rarely fight but might boost the soldiers' effectiveness with blessings.

If death stallers are present they form a defensive and mobile unit around the general and other high commanders. The only personnel allowed trough this barrier during a battle are runners.

Mage, archery and artillery regiments form the rest of the back of the army while infantry forms the front with cavalry on the flanks.

This is the textbook Midgardian deployment tactic, but this is often changed to meet the needs of the current situation, especially if mercenaries are involved, which often are.

Regiment layout

All regiments in the army of Midgard are composed of forty soldiers. All regiments have one regiment leader (the captain) and all regiments have one lieutenant that assists the leader in the job of leading the soldiers.

All other soldiers in the regiment are of equal rank but several of these might have special tasks. One of these special tasks is the role of "first". The first soldier or first marine or first anything is tasked with being a role model for the rest of the regiment and being the regiments spokesperson towards the captain and lieutenant. Official complaints go trough one of the firsts in the regiment. The first is usually charismatic, proud and has been with the regiment for some time. They are often, but not always promoted to lieutenant or captain when the time comes. Other special tasks include banner carrying, field ballistic calculus, beast mastery, carpeting, battleritualist, etc.
